La mostra collettiva Each Evening We See The Sunset si ispira ad un breve paragrafo scritto in Ways of Seeing (Sul guardare) dal critico d’arte John Berger:

“Il rapporto tra ciò che vediamo e ciò che sappiamo non è mai definito una volta per tutte. Ogni sera vediamo tramontare il Sole. Sappiamo che la Terra se ne allontana ruotando su se stessa. Eppure saperlo, saperselo spiegare, è sempre leggermente inadeguato rispetto a ciò che vediamo”. (John Berger, 1972)

Riflettendo su come si guarda un’immagine, Berger cattura perfettamente l’essenza di un dilemma ricorrente: che cosa c’è di reale nella percezione soggettiva? Each Evening We See The Sunset, prende questa domanda come spunto per presentare i lavori di sei giovani artisti che espongono per la prima volta in Italia e si interrogano sulla relazione tra oggetto e immagine, materia e idea. L’atto del guardare viene preso come punto di partenza per analizzare il concetto di immagine come qualcosa che modella la nostra comprensione del mondo, il nostro immaginario e il nostro modo di osservare le cose, ma anche come qualcosa di profondamente soggetto allo sguardo dello spettatore e al suo potere di attribuire significato a ciò che vede. Nelle stanze di Spazio Morris, la presenza fisica delle opere diventa spunto fondamentale per considerare fotografie, sculture e video come agglomerati di materia e quindi oggetti in grado di determinare la nostra percezione del reale e dell’apparente. Interrogandosi, quindi, sul rapporto tra rappresentazione e percezione, la mostra prende in considerazione lo sguardo dello spettatore, il suo potere di tradurre e interpretare e indaga, così, sulla frattura che si crea tra ciò che ci viene mostrato e ciò che vediamo.

The group exhibition Each Evening We See The Sunset is inspired by a short paragraph written in Ways of Seeing by the critic John Berger:

‘The relation between what we see and what we know is never settled. Each evening we see the sunset. We know that the Earth is turning away from it. Yet the knowledge, the explanation, never quite fits the sight’ (John Berger, 1972).

Considering how we look at an image, Berger perfectly captures the essence of a recurring dilemma: what is real in subjective perception?
Each Evening We See The Sunset, takes this question as an opportunity to present the works of six young artists exhibiting for the first time in Italy and questioning the relationship between image and object, matter and idea. The act of looking is taken as the starting point to investigate the notion of image as something that shapes our understanding of the world, our imagery and the way we see things, yet as something profoundly affected by the subject’s look, by its way of seeing and of giving meaning to the work.
In the rooms of Spazio Morris, the physical presence of the works becomes vital to consider photographs, sculptures and videos as outcomes of a material process and therefore as objects able to determine our perception of reality and fiction.
Considering viewers and their agency, their power to create a sense of unity and capacity to translate and interpret, to trace new associations and disassociations from the spectacle they view, this exhibition is an attempt to drag them into an exercise around the act of looking, aimed at exploring the fracture existing between what we are shown and what we see.
