Dopo due anni di vita, spazio Morris presenta “This must be the place” di Deborah Farnault, suo primo solo project in Italia.

Nella loro celebre canzone This must be the place, i Talking Heads esplorano il disagio e il disorientamento di fondo che accompagna l’intimità e la nostalgia di casa. Il lavoro di Deborah Farnault crea un simile senso di discordia: si mantiene l’ordine visivo di un paesaggio, esponendo tranquillità fatiscenti.

Con i lavori basati su testi, Farnault ci ricorda che i testi, anche quelli che sembrano completi, sono intrinsecamente pieni di lacune: siamo noi a riempirli di significato in base alle nostre esperienze, la nostra percezione e i nostri desideri. L’artista definisce questa serie “paesaggi frammentati,” perchè i testi hanno hanno una dimensione spaziale e scenica. Questo collegamento si trova anche nella serie Beasts (2012) in cui Farnault rimuove pezzi significativi di paesaggio. L’ovvia e intenzionale sottrazione ci costringe ad affrontare la sensazione che qualcosa manca sempre. Evocando la malinconia delle cose che si perdono, Beasts affronta gli interventi umani nel mondo naturale e preme per recuperare ciò che è andato a disperdersi, ciò che resta sfuggente. Le lacune di Beasts assomigliano alle forme di fantasmi luminosi.

La serie di fotografie sgranate Wild Things Are (2012) ci portano nel fitto sottobosco della foresta, dove si possono quasi sentire i segugi in cerca di un corpo o di un fuggitivo che ha preso rifugio.

Farnault presenterà anche un nuovo video, come un work in progress “Without Purpose, Without Courage, Without Thought,” con una particolare attenzione al paesaggio e all’autenticità delle esperienze.

In definitiva la mostra This Must Be the Place mostra la consistenza della carriera artistica di Deborah Farnault: i suoi paesaggi non nascondono le cancellature, che sono una parte importante della loro stessa esistenza. Farnault spezza l’irritante tabù della pratica artistica, che richiede all’artista di cancellare tutte le tracce o cancellature, al fine di preservare l’integrità dell’illusione. I paesaggi di Farnault si rifiutano di nascondere pratiche vergognose di copertura che sono essenziali per la creazione di un paesaggio o di una narrativa.

La mostra resterà a spazio Morris dal 10 al 15 Novembre, durante cui sarà anche possibile sfogliare il catalogo 20112012 (Fortino Edizioni), che raccoglie l’intera attività svoltasi nel 2010/2011. Il prossimo evento in programma sarà il 28 novembre.

After two years of existence, Spazio Morris now presents Deborah Farnault’s exhibition "This Must Be the Place", her first solo project in Italy.
In their song This Must Be the Place, the Talking Heads explore the underlying unease and disorientation that accompanies intimacy and the longing for home. Deborah Farnault’s work creates a similar sense of discord: she maintains the visual order of a landscape while exposing crumbling tranquility.
With Farnault’s text-based works, we are reminded that texts – even those that appear complete – are inherently full of gaps. As such, we fill in meaning based on our own experiences, perception and desires. The artist calls this series "fragmented landscapes", attesting that texts have both a spatial and scenic dimension. This connection also lies in the series Beasts (2012) where Farnault removes significant pieces from landscapes. The obvious and intentional subtraction forces us to face the feeling that something is always missing. Evoking the melancholy of things that are lost, Beasts confronts the human interventions in the natural world and presses us to recover what has been squandered, what remains elusive. The gaps in Beasts resemble the shapes of glowing ghosts.

The grainy prints series Wild Things Are (2012) lead us into the thick undergrowth of the forest, where you can almost hear the hounds in search of a body or a fugitive who has taken refuge.

Farnault will also present a new video as a work-in-progress, “Without Purpose, Without Courage, Without Thought”, with a focus on landscape and authenticity of experience.

Ultimately, the exhibition This Must Be the Place shows the consistency of Deborah Farnault’s artistic career: her landscapes do not hide the erasures, which are an important part of their very existence. Farnault breaks the tiresome taboo in artistic practice, which requires the artist to erase all traces or deletions in order to preserve the integrity of illusion. Farnault's landscapes refuse to conceal shameful practices of coverage that are essential in the creation of any landscape or narrative.

Spazio Morris’s 2011–2012 catalogue, published at Fortino Editions, will also be available, and the next event is scheduled for November 28, 2012.
